Smash Wrestling: Smashing it up

TWO: Tag Teams

As good as Wrestlemania was, it did show up one major problem with the WWF right now, namely that the Tag division has gone to hell. From being a major part of the WWF just over a year ago, to being full of stale or dull teams that nobody cares about is a hell of step.

The Dudleys heel act just doesn't interest me anymore - and it seems that a lot of the punters that go and see the WWF live just want them to go back to being faces again, with the constant chants for tables. The Hardys seem to be stuck in a timewarp - the attempt to split them up came about a year too late to be of any interest, and their spots seem to have lost the sparkle they once had. Scotty & Albert is a waste of Albert, who is starting to look a good bet for a decent singles career.

New champions Billy & Chucky have a gimmick that's too stupid to buy into them as major heels, even if Billy does have a proven tag record in the WWF, and Chucky had a decent history in the WCW tag division. The APA are just there... they don't seem to mind the fact that they aren't seen as anything other than beer loving card playing thugs. The once interesting "hired guns" gimmick has just been forgotten about.

Teams are thrown together by the show, and don't have any longevity anymore - Tazz & Spike, Booker & Test, Christian & Storm... the list goes on. What the WWF needs come the much rumoured split is an influx of tag teams that will raise the profile of the division a little. There's some good solid workers on the roster that could be used to spice up the tag division - Chavo Guerrero, Shawn O'Haire, Tommy Dreamer, Raven, Hugh Morrus, Billy Kidman and the soon to be returning Mike Awesome and Kanyon to name a few.

Something has to be done, and surely now, after a lacklustre tag match at Wrestlemania, the problem will be obvious to Vince, Stephanie, or whoever is in charge of the booking this week. Tag team wrestling can be save, but something must be done now.

Until next time, have fun, go mad...
