Smash Wrestling: Smashing it up

TWO: King of The Ring

Just finished watching the superb Champions League final at that Hampden place, just a few miles along the road from me... and it got me thinking... remember when King Of The Ring was built up like the Champions League is? Being King Of The Ring was a big deal - look at the prestige it gave Owen Hart, Ken Shamrock, Triple H, Steve Austin... but then again, also look at Mabel and Billy Gunn for killing it dead...

Gets me thinking about this year’s King Of The Ring tourney -- will it go back to being the classic quarter, semi and final on the PPV again? In my mind, that makes winning it more of a big deal - having to go through 3 matches in one night, as opposed to two. Also saves having to pad out the show with meaningless other matches, although Shane McMahon and Kurt Angle’s streetfight will long be remembered, probably more so than Edge becoming King.

With the rosters being split this year, how will things work? Will Smackdown be given one half of the draw, and Raw the other? with Flair and McMahon both being heel owners, will there be a shortage of faces or an over-abundance of screwjob finishes? I’d prefer each half of the draw to be roster specific - and make a big deal out of the final being inter-promotional - maybe even have McMahon and Flair at ringside to emphasise the importance of the winner.

Whatever happens, the WWE should make a huge deal of the winner this year to try and bring the tourney back to prominence, and give the winner a little bit more prestige. And the winner... will they go with someone a Real Madrid ‘expected’ choice like a Benoit, RVD or Lesnar, or a Leverkusen ‘outsider’ like Bubba, Spike or even Shawn Stasiak? Let everyone know what you think in the poll on the main page at TWO. Me? I’m going to be boring and wait until I see who makes it to the PPV...
