Smash Wrestling: Smashing it up

TWO: Hogan

Sunday night’s Judgement Day saw a bittersweet finish to it - on one hand it was one of the worst Title matches in history, with easily the worst chokeslam ever imagined - but Hogan dropped the title, which is always a plus point.

But has Hogan dropped the title for long? Hogan has never been one to job for people without getting something out of it. Bear in mind that if Hogan regains the title - he’ll become a seven time WWE champion - which would be a record. Doesn’t that sound like a record Hogan would love to have?

Thankfully, it looks from Judgement Day that we’re going to get Hogan vs. McMahon at the next PPV - and how strange is it to type “thankfully” before a Vince McMahon match. This is the thing with Hogan - while he may be getting the cheers from the crowd, he just doesn’t look like a credible champion - shouldn’t you have to be the best wrestler in the company, not just have the most friends backstage?

Hogan is nowhere near the best wrestler in the company - if it wasn’t for Billy Gunn, he’d be the worst - but that may be unfair on Billy Gunn. Hogan’s big boot-leg drop combination looked dated in the 80’s and not even nostalgia can make it look anything other than laughable. So why is he at the top of the card? Because nostalgia sells T-shirts, that’s why - the minute the T-shirt sales slow down - he’ll be gone again.

Respect is due to Hogan for everything he’s done for wrestling - he was the first mainstream star, the guy that paved the way for The Rock and Steve Austin - but respect for someone’s past does not earn them the right to take over the spotlight today.
